Breakin' in the bouncer

Breakin' in the bouncer, originally uploaded by Ava's Antics.

Today a nurse from the hospital where Doni delivered came to the house to see how things are going for Doni and Ava. Ava also needed to get one more blood sample taken from her already band-aided feet. Doni said it was hard to watch. I, on the other hand, wasn't home during the visit because I had a final this morning (which I think went well).

Doni has said that there are things that Ava does that she can remember her doing in the womb. Mostly these are certain kicks (probably roundhouse) or jumps from her being startled. The thing that is most apparent to me is her hiccups. As a matter of fact, Ava is hiccupping right now next to me on the couch. When she was still in the womb Doni would sit still and you could see her abdomen jump every few seconds as Ava could hiccup. She even hiccupped during delivery!

Ava's first well-baby checkup with her doctor is on Thursday. When she was born she was 7 lbs 10 oz, when she left the hospital she was 7 lbs 2.9 oz, and today when the nurse came she was 6 lbs 10 oz. It'll be interesting to see what she is on Thursday. Doni's milk came in Saturday so Ava's been getting some good nutrition since then, but she's still got some catching up to do.

Last night as Ava was sleeping in Doni's lap she laughed. It was pretty cute, but it made me wonder.... What do baby's dream about? Sometimes when she's sleeping you can tell that she's happy or scared because she makes lots of faces and noises. But again, what does she dream about when she has less than a week of experiences that don't include a uterus everywhere you look?

Today when Ava was in her bouncer Sparky went over and sniffed her for a little while. When he was satisfied, he laid down in front of her bouncer to watch guard over her as she slept (at least that's my interpretation). I tried to take a picture, but Sparky got camera shy when I got the right angle for the shot. Our dogs (Sparky and Sassy) have been paying more attention to Ava recently. At first they pretty much thought she was a thing that we had brought home, like a pillow, basket, or other inanimate object. Over the past few days of her making noises they have never heard before (other than her constant farting, which they are used to hearing quite often), they have become more interested. Sparky seems to know that he should be careful around her, as he approaches her with caution. Sassy seems to know that she is not something that is to be chewed on, even if she squeaks. They're good dogs and we couldn't have asked for a better welcome than the one that they have given Ava.
