Our Versatile Little Girl

Cute as a button, originally uploaded by Ava's Antics.

There's a new show (new to us anyway) on the Discovery Channel that we've started watching. It's called Man vs Wild. The host, Bear Grylls (how cool of a name is that), is dropped off in a deserted area (often by helicopter) and has to not only survive, but also find his way back to civilization with minimal supplies. Often this includes only a knife, flint, and the clothes on his back. Sometimes he doesn't get the luxury of having the flint.

You would think that Doni and I were the only ones in our home that would be educated by this man's antics. You would be wrong.

Ava has been holding her bottle by herself for some time. At first she would sandwich the bottle between her limbs any way she could (usually ending up with the bottle between her wrists). She has gotten better and better and began adding her own flair to the relatively simple task. She has gotten to the point where she multi-tasks during this mundane time.

Using her newfound knowledge from seeing Man vs Wild, she practices her fire-making ability. She puts her bottle in her mouth, sandwiches it between her open hands, and spins it back and forth just as you would to make fire with a stick and friction. We'll let her continue to hone her skills until we begin seeing smoke come out of her nose.

Do we watch too much TV?.... Maybe
Is Ava learning possibly life-saving skills she can use if ever marooned on a deserted island... Absolutely.
