Busy Fourth

Around the fourth of July there is a lot going on around here and we tried to fit in as much as possible. We went to a festival that was PACKED full of people and spent nearly $30 on artery-clogging fair food. With the heat and shear onslaught of people we decided to not stay very long. In the early evening we went to a parade where the parade participants threw gobs of candy to those on the side of the street. Since Ava isn't quite at an appropriate age for hard candy and Tootsie Rolls, Doni and I picked our favorites and left the rest on the street for the children to pick up. Apparently we're pretty intimidating because they laid there the entire rest of the parade.

That night we put Ava to bed when she started acting tired only to wake her again when it was time to leave for the fireworks. Having been asleep for 2-3 hours at this point, she was not impressed with being awoken at 9 pm. I started rubbing her back to win back her favor, but had to quickly stop as she started to drift back off to la-la land. The entire trip to downtown Indy she gave us her patented "eyebrows". They were pretty good fireworks, but Ava lost interest after the first couple of minutes. Still, she appreciated them enough to wave good-bye to the sky when they finished.

The next day we left to go to the beach on Lake Michigan with Aunt Terry and Jacob (cousin). Ava took in the expansive water and long shoreline as we walked to our plot of sand. She wasn't, however, too keen on putting her feet into the water. After the first time her feet went in the water she drew them up in front of her to keep from letting this clearly traumatic experience from happening again. You'd think that the water had burned her like an acid bath from the way that she had acted. She warmed up to the experience after sitting on the water's edge for some time and eventually crawled right into the lake. We had to keep her from getting too overzealous because we haven't yet taught her the back-stroke.

I did take the time to teach her one vital skill that will serve her well for ages. This is a skill that every child learns, or at least should learn, at a young age. It will serve her well and form a basis for learning many more skills. As I'm sure you've already figured out, I taught her how to feed me grapes. From now on I shall eat like an emperor.
